Predictive Poetry ✍️

Mother’s Day (at least in Canada) was on May 10. Seeing as my mother, who lives in Nova Scotia, is a total of 16,657 kilometres away from her four children we did a Zoom Mother’s Day call. The idea was that we (kids and partners and grandkids) would all make a toast to my mother.

I decided to create a stream of consciousness poem, of sorts, that was created by starting a text message to my mother on my iPhone by writing the word ‘mom’, followed by repeatedly pressing the suggested word in the middle of the screen.

In this case it is suggesting “Moments” but when I did it last time it was suggesting “Mommy” (see below). As to why it would suggest Mommy, seeing as I have never in my life written or used this word, is beyond me, but I have to assume that, in general, there is some sort of connection to what I normally write. I would also think (though don’t know) that they would tune the prediction to the person you were writing to? Anyway, below is the “poem” that my phone composed for my Mother’s Day toast.

Mommy and thanks again for your time I appreciate you hope you had fun with me I love your voice and I hope you’re doing well hope you’re having fun and thanks again I hope you had fun I hope you have a good night hope you’re having fun with me I hope you had fun I love your voice and I hope you’re doing well I hope you had fun I love your message I love your face I hope you’re doing good thanks for the reminder I hope you had fun doing your face with the stuff I hope you’re having fun and thanks again I hope you had fun doing good I hope you had fun I hope you’re doing good thanks for the message I hope you had fun I hope you’re doing good I hope you’re having fun with me thanks for the reminder

While expressing thanks for a reminder does seem like something I might write to my mother, I am deeply confused by the focus on her “face”. I don’t think that this is really anything I write about to anybody. Perhaps it is combining my own usage with the larger corpus of users? Anyway, give it a shot. I’m curious what your phone comes up with.
